Our Process

Initial Discussions

1. Initial Discussion & Consultation

Discuss your needs, location, and initial plans. Maybe you need a brand new jetty, boat ramp, and boat shed? Need to repair a damaged jetty? Looking to add a floating pontoon to your existing structure? Need foreshore protection/retaining walls or cliff steps?

Whatever your needs, the first step is a friendly chat.

Site Inspection

2. Site Inspection & Seabed Survey

We will inspect your proposed site and conduct a seabed survey. This is necessary to help us understand your setting. From this, we can advise you on your best options and develop an initial concept design.

Why a site survey? There are a few reasons. The seabed profile dictates the required length of your jetty to ensure adequate water depth at a Low Spring Tide. Depending on the local topography, we will advise if wooden piles can be used or if iron piles will be required. The specific location also determines what pontoon options are best suited.

Concept Plan

3. Develop Initial Concept Plan/Design

After inspecting your site and in consultation with you, we create the initial draft plan for your proposed build. It’s important this plan considers what is likely to be approved by Council during step 5, the Resource Consent Application.

Full Quotation

4. Full Quotation

Once you are happy with the proposed plan, we provide you with a full in-depth quotation. This is comprehensive, down to the last nut and bolt.

Resource Concent Application

5. Resource Consent Application

Over the last 23 years, we’ve developed key relationships at the Marlborough District Council along with a thorough understanding of the resource consent process. With many successful applications under our belt, we’ve earned a reputation for helping our clients successfully navigate the resource consent process - at a fraction of the cost of traditional consultants.

Engineer Plans

6. Fully Engineered Plans

Once your resource consent is approved, you will need full engineer’s plans in order to obtain building consent. We work closely with several local engineers who are experienced with foreshore construction projects. We can pass your concept plan on to them.

Building Consent

7. Building Consent

Obtaining building consent from the Marlborough District Council is the final official step before we can start construction.

Construction Build

8. Construction/Build

Once building consent is granted, we can begin the building process. Please note that we prioritise start dates in the order that quotes are accepted.

Build Process
  • Pencil in expected start date
  • Order required materials (Timber, piles, bolts, nails, floats, fenders, chain, concrete blocks, link span, etc.)
  • Coordinate and book the barge and pile driving contractors
  • Ensure materials and piles are delivered to the port before pile driving day
  • Pile driving day - this is critical. The foundations of any build are the most important step. Our key contractors (barge operators and pile driver) are very experienced, know what they are doing, and have worked with us for many years.
  • Construction. With the most experienced jetty building team around, we pride ourselves on producing a quality product despite working in a challenging environment. Our completion times are affected by weather, tides, and site distance from port.
Engineers Inspection

9. Engineer’s Inspection

Once construction is complete we notify the engineer who then physically inspects the work and forwards a PS4 document to council for sign off. This will trigger your Code of Compliance certificate and is your guarantee that the work has been carried out to the engineer’s specifications.

Long Term Maintenance

10. Long Term Maintenance

Although we build the best jetties, floating pontoons, slipways, and boat shed foundations in Marlborough, nothing lasts forever. If you wish, we can help you with ongoing maintenance. This will ensure your jetty passes its next resource consent inspection - these occur every 15 years - and gives you many decades of use.

George & Rachel Harper

After initial discussions on building a floating jetty and boat shed, Foreshore Construction took on the project, directly organised the consent process, engineering drawing and then the construction. With reliable and constant communication throughout the project, Carl and his team did a fantastic job. The careful attention to the many details resulted in a quality build, neat and tidy in every way. It’s a great outcome and will last for years. We highly recommend Foreshore Construction to anyone considering.

From start to finish Neville, and then Carl, and the team at Foreshore construction were a pleasure to work with.  Covid and a number of resource consent changes/delays meant it was a rocky start but still Carl managed to complete the project well within the expected timeframe. The jetty itself is a thing of beauty and workmanship is top notch. It is an absolute game changer for us in Savill Bay.
